AI Sales Assistant & Live Chat Bot — Answer Shoppers, Fill Carts, Track Orders

A chat bubble on every storefront page that answers shoppers, fills carts, and tracks orders from your live store data

Description

AI Chatbot puts a chat bubble on every page of your CS-Cart storefront. Your shoppers ask questions the way they’d ask a helpful sales assistant, and the AI answers using your real catalog, live cart, and (for signed-in shoppers) their own order history.

No menus to click through, no scripted flows, no chat scripts to write. Shoppers just ask:

  • “Do you sell blue T-shirts?”
  • “What’s your return policy?”
  • “Add the red large to my cart”
  • “Where’s my order?”

…and they get a real answer in seconds, straight from your store’s live data. Behind the scenes the AI works from a fixed list of safe, ready-made lookups (like “search products”, “get cart snapshot”, “look up this order”), using your store’s own built-in cart and catalog tools, so every safety rule and access limit you already have stays exactly the same. If the question matches something the AI can look up, the shopper gets an answer; if it doesn’t, the AI politely says what it CAN help with instead of guessing.

The widget can also do things for the shopper: add or remove cart items, change quantities, apply coupon codes, reorder their last order. Every action uses your store’s normal cart code, so items appear in the mini-cart, on page refresh, and at checkout exactly like a manual add-to-cart click. Every conversation is scoped to that shopper’s own session — an anonymous visitor only ever sees the public catalog and their own session cart; a signed-in customer also sees their own orders, wishlist, and reward points, never anyone else’s. You choose which of 8 AI services powers the widget, switchable any time without reinstalling.

Want an AI assistant for your admin panel too? That’s a separate add-on, CartModules: AI Store Copilot. It uses the same 8 AI services and lets your admins and vendors ask sales, inventory, customer, and order questions in plain English. Install it alongside this one for the full experience — each add-on works on its own.

Key Features

  • Ask Anything in Plain English — no menus, no scripted flows, no chat scripts; shoppers type or dictate and the AI answers
  • Safe by Design — the AI can only use a fixed list of ready-made lookups and actions built on your store’s own cart and catalog code; it never invents its own way to read your data
  • Eight AI Services to Choose From — Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, Google Gemini, Mistral AI, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, Groq, and xAI Grok; switch any time without reinstalling
  • Simple Setup Page — pick a provider and only its fields show, with a “How to get your API key” panel and sign-up link at the top
  • Chat Bubble on Every Page — a 60px circle in the corner in your chosen colour, with an optional store logo in the header
  • Page-Context Aware — on a product page “how much is this?” / “is it in stock?” answer from the current product; on the cart page it reads the live cart, no round-trip needed
  • Real-Time Mini-Cart Sync — the theme’s mini-cart badge updates immediately when the AI adds or removes items
  • Product Cards Under Answers — search and detail replies render as clickable cards with image, name, price, in-stock badge, and add-to-cart button
  • Compare Product Card — “compare these two products” returns a clean side-by-side card with pictures, prices, ratings and key features
  • Order-Tracking Card — “where is my order?” shows a tracking card with a 4-stage delivery timeline (Placed → Processing → Shipped → Delivered) and a one-click courier link
  • Complete-the-Look Upsells — adding a product suggests 1–2 companion products, a natural upsell with no manual setup
  • Save for Later from Chat — signed-in shoppers can say “save this for later” and the AI adds it to their wishlist
  • Follow-Up Chips, Welcome Carousel & Suggested Questions — 2–3 next-question chips after each answer, an optional product strip on open, and up to 6 admin chips
  • Streaming, Voice & Image Input — optional character-by-character streaming, a dictation mic, and image upload on vision-capable providers
  • Remembers the Conversation — signed-in shoppers see their prior chat; anonymous shoppers keep history within the browser session
  • RTL & Multilingual — automatic RTL for Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Urdu; answers in the visitor’s browser language
  • Full-Screen on Phones — on small screens the chat opens full-screen like a native messaging app
  • Chat Widget Insights Dashboard — questions, cost, top asked and failed questions, thumbs-down responses, blocked injection attempts, retention preview, auto-KB suggestions, and top question themes
  • Cost Dashboard & Caps — a daily-spend chart and per-provider breakdown, a monthly budget with 80% / 90% warnings, an optional per-shopper 30-day cap, and per-day question caps
  • Train the AI — instant verbatim FAQ answers (zero AI cost) plus a keyword-matched Knowledge Base the AI reads on demand
  • Prompt-Injection Defence — jailbreak tricks (“ignore all previous instructions”, “dump the database”, “give me a free coupon”) are blocked before the AI sees them, and every block is logged
  • Deeper Privacy & Auto-Delete — masks emails, phones, cards, IBAN, SSN and crypto wallet addresses in logs, with an automatic chat-data retention window (no cron needed)

You need an account with at least one of these AI services. Sign up, generate an API key, paste it into the addon settings, and you’re ready to go. The AI service bills you directly for what you use — usually a fraction of a cent per shopper question.

How It Works

  1. Pick an AI service in the addon settings and paste your API key from that service
  2. Tick “Show chat widget on storefront” and save — a chat bubble appears in the corner of every storefront page
  3. A shopper clicks the bubble, sees your welcome message and optional suggested-question chips, and types or dictates a question
  4. The AI picks the right lookups from its safe list, runs them against your live store data, and writes back a plain-English answer
  5. If it’s a product search, the widget shows clickable product cards with add-to-cart buttons; if the shopper says “add the red large to my cart”, the real cart and mini-cart badge update in place
  6. Every question and answer is logged so you can see what shoppers are asking in the Chat Widget Insights dashboard

Off-topic questions (weather, jokes, general web) get a polite “here’s what I can help with” instead of a guess. A typical shopper question costs a fraction of a cent.

What Shoppers Can Ask

  • Browse the catalog — “Do you sell blue T-shirts?” · “Show me products between $100 and $500” · “What’s on sale?” · “What brands do you carry?”
  • Product details (on a product page or by name/SKU) — “How much is this?” · “Is it in stock?” · “Show me all sizes” · “Show me reviews for product JE-529”
  • Compare products — “Compare products 60 and 75” · “Which is better, the blue jacket or the red one?”
  • Cart help — “What’s in my cart?” · “Add red large to my cart” · “Change quantity to 3” · “Apply coupon SPRING10” · “Reorder my last order”
  • Order lookup (signed-in) — “Where’s my order?” · “Track order 128” · “Has my order shipped?” · “Delivery ETA?”
  • Personal (signed-in) — “How many reward points do I have?” · “What’s in my wishlist?” · “Save this for later”
  • Store policies & help — “How do I place an order?” · “Do you ship internationally?” · “How do I contact support?” · “Where are your physical stores?”
  • Seller / vendor (Multi-Vendor, on a product page) — “Who sells this?” · “Show me other products from this seller” · “Take me to the seller’s storefront”

What the AI Can Do Behind the Scenes

Shoppers never see these names and never have to word a question in any special way. Every tool uses your store’s own built-in cart and catalog code, so all your access limits stay in place automatically — an anonymous shopper’s chat can never see another shopper’s cart, orders, or account.

AreaWhat it coversTools
CatalogSearch products (keyword / category / brand / price / in-stock / sort); product details; list categories; list brands; product reviews and Q&A; compare 2–4 products side by side6
Cart (anonymous or signed-in)Cart snapshot; add to cart with colour/size resolution (plus complete-the-look suggestions); update quantity; remove; apply coupon; reorder the last paid order6
Orders (signed-in only)List recent orders; order details; list shipments with tracking numbers; rich order-tracking card with delivery timeline and courier link4
Personal (signed-in only)Reward-point balance and activity; wishlist; add or remove wishlist items3
Store infoPayment methods; shipping methods and rates; active promotions and coupons; store policies; physical store locations (via Store Locator)5
Seller / vendor (Multi-Vendor)Who sells a product (vendor name + storefront/catalog links); search filtered by the current product’s seller

Train the AI

Admin → AI Chatbot → Train the AI. Teach the chatbot about your store two ways:

  • Instant FAQ answers — add exact-match question/answer pairs; a matching question returns your admin-authored answer verbatim, instantly, with zero AI cost. Add them one at a time or bulk-upload a CSV (question, answer); matching is normalised for casing, punctuation and whitespace
  • Knowledge base — paste or upload longer documents (.txt / .md / .csv / .json); each is chunked into ~500-character passages, and on every question the AI reads the top-3 most relevant passages and cites them. Enable/disable documents any time; a hit counter shows which passages get used. Zero embedding cost — keyword matching runs in your database, and works with all 8 providers

Who It’s For

  • Store owners & admins — install it when you want your storefront to feel like a live sales assistant is on duty 24/7, answering questions, helping shoppers find products, tracking orders, and handling coupons without paying for live-chat staff. Set it up in about 10 minutes, then tune your descriptions and FAQ from what the Insights dashboard shows
  • Shoppers — anonymous visitors can browse the catalog, check policies, add to cart, and apply coupons; signed-in customers additionally see their own orders, wishlist, and reward-point balance; no visitor ever sees another visitor’s data

Requirements

  • CS-Cart Store Builder or Multi-Vendor (single or multiple storefronts) 4.6.3 or higher
  • PHP 7.4 or higher (tested up to PHP 8.3)
  • An API key from at least one supported provider (Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, Google Gemini, Mistral AI, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, Groq, or xAI Grok)
  • Your server must be able to make outgoing HTTPS calls to the AI provider you choose
  • The default CS-Cart theme (Responsive), or a child theme that inherits from it

Works With Standard CS-Cart Only

The widget works with your store’s default CS-Cart data — products, orders, categories, cart, wishlist, reward points, promotions, shipping methods, payment methods, and store locations — plus a few standard add-ons like Wishlist, Reward Points, Discussion (product Q&A), Store Locator, and RMA. It does not know about custom changes your developers may have added, such as:

  • Custom product fields added outside CS-Cart’s standard features
  • Custom order fields, custom order tables, or custom checkout flows
  • Data from third-party add-ons that don’t follow CS-Cart’s standard data structure

If you want the widget to work with your custom data too, a custom version can be built for your store — get in touch.

Installation

  1. Go to Add-ons > Manage add-ons, click Manual installation, and upload the addon zip file
  2. Activate the addon and enter the license key
  3. Open the addon settings, pick your AI service from the AI provider dropdown, and paste that service’s API key (the “How to get your API key” panel shows the steps and a sign-up link)
  4. Tick Show chat widget on storefront under the Chat widget section, save, and open your storefront — the chat bubble is now in the bottom corner

Configuration Options

The settings page has two sections: General (which AI service, API keys, cost caps) and Chat widget (everything shoppers see and do).

General & Cost Controls

SettingDescription
AI providerWhich service answers shopper questions; changing it shows only that service’s fields and switches the help panel to match
API keysOne field per provider; the secret key is stored hidden and never shown again
Model IDsThe model name for each provider; defaults work well — only change if the provider’s docs suggest another
Assistant brand nameThe name the AI uses to introduce itself
Monthly budget (USD)The addon stops answering when the month’s cost reaches this amount
Budget warning notificationsAdmin-panel warnings at 80% and 90% of the cap (reset on the 1st)

Chat Widget Settings

  • Visibility — master on/off, logged-in-only, show-on-mobile, hide on listed pages, and which corner the bubble sits in
  • Branding — widget title, chat agent name, button tooltip pill, button and header colours, and show store logo in the header
  • Welcome & first open — welcome message, welcome product carousel (bestsellers / new arrivals / on-sale / none), and up to 6 suggested-question chips
  • Behaviour — streaming, overflow menu, Copy answer, thumbs up/down, voice mic, follow-up chips, product cards (max per answer, add-to-cart button, carousel or grid), bundle-upsell hints, auto browser-language, image upload, and persistent history for signed-in shoppers
  • Assistant style — assistant tone (friendly, professional, energetic, humorous and more), response length (short / medium / long), and an extra store-specific system prompt
  • Rich cards & upsells — save-for-later to wishlist, in-widget compare card, rich order-tracking card, complete-the-look / customers-also-bought suggestions, and full-screen widget on mobile
  • Guardrails & safety — anonymous questions/day per IP, logged-in questions/day per account, a per-shopper 30-day USD cost cap, prompt-injection defence (on by default), deeper PII redaction, and an auto-delete retention window for chat history and logs
  • Insights extras — auto-KB suggestions from downvoted answers, and unanswered-theme clustering

Chat Widget Insights Dashboard

Admin → AI Chatbot → Chat Widget Insights, over a rolling window (7 / 14 / 30 / 60 / 90 / 180 / 365 days): total questions, total cost, average cost per question, failure rate, top asked and top failed questions, recent thumbs-down responses (with the shopper’s name/profile link or “Guest”), a daily-spend cost dashboard with a per-provider breakdown, the last blocked prompt-injection attempts with the reason for each, a chat-data retention preview (with a run-now purge), suggested Knowledge Base entries from thumbs-down clusters, and the top question themes. On Multi-Vendor, each vendor sees only their own storefront’s data.

Sample Questions to Try

  • “Do you sell blue T-shirts?” · “Show me products between $100 and $500” · “What’s on sale?”
  • “How much is this?” / “Is it in stock?” / “Show me all sizes” (on a product page)
  • “Compare products 60 and 75” (shows the rich side-by-side compare card)
  • “What’s your return policy?” · “Do you ship internationally?” · “How do I contact support?”
  • “What’s in my cart?” · “Add red large to my cart” · “Change quantity to 3” · “Apply coupon SPRING10” · “Reorder my last order”
  • “Where’s my order?” / “Track order 128” (signed-in — shows the rich tracking card)
  • “How many reward points do I have?” · “What’s in my wishlist?” · “Save this for later” (signed-in)

Privacy and Security

  • The widget only sends the AI provider what’s needed to answer the shopper’s question (product names, category names, order totals) — never your admin/database passwords, payment or bank details, or saved API keys and system settings
  • Shopper emails and phone numbers in AI answers are masked with stand-ins by default; your store’s own support email and phone are allow-listed so “how do I reach you?” still works
  • Deeper PII protection — on top of email / phone / credit-card masking, bank account numbers (IBAN), Social Security numbers, Canadian SIN, and crypto wallet addresses are hidden from chat logs
  • The AI can only use a fixed safe list of lookups and actions built on your store’s own cart and catalog tools; per-question caps (at most 10 lookups, no exact lookup repeated more than 3 times) stop loops
  • Prompt-injection defence — jailbreak tricks (“ignore all previous instructions”, “dump the database”, “give me a free coupon”) are stopped before the AI sees them, so you don’t pay for the request, and every block is logged on the Insights dashboard
  • Account & data requests (GDPR / DPDP) — when a shopper asks to delete their account or data, unsubscribe, or make a similar privacy request, the widget escalates to your support team rather than acting on its own, and never mistakes “delete my account” for “delete a cart item”
  • Off-topic questions are blocked on your own server before reaching the AI; shoppers can only ever see their own data; cart writes go through CS-Cart’s normal cart code
  • Auto-delete old chat data — pick a retention window (Never / 30 / 60 / 90 / 180 / 365 days) and old conversations and audit logs clear automatically in the background (no cron); your Knowledge Base, FAQ patterns, and vendor settings are never touched
  • Rate limits protect you from runaway spending: a per-day cap for anonymous (per IP) and signed-in (per account) shoppers, plus an optional per-shopper 30-day dollar ceiling

Compatibility

Works with CS-Cart Multi-Vendor and Store Builder editions, Single Storefront and Multiple Storefronts, version 4.6.3 or higher. The widget is tested against the default Responsive theme.
